I recently picked up a pair of GBR's, I know they like to have some caves and rocks, but not sure how I should place them in my tank. I already have 2 low slate caves, but these are occupied by my rubber lip pleco's, and despite the GBR's attempt to look tough, I doubt they will move out anytime soon.

I have a piece of driftwood with a natural curve that creates a cave that is about 2" high, but was wondering what other options there are. My tank is planted, and I had already been debating taking out a piece of driftwood to add more room for plants. So now I need to think about adding caves, I have some pieces of slate, just want to see some ideas to get my head thinking about where to place them.

Thanks.

I use terra cotta flowerpots for pleco caves, and they will work for cichlids as well. you can turn them upside down and knock a hole in the side, or try to split them in half.

might want to wander over to your local landscaping store/ sand gravel place and ask them for a few pieces of slate.their broken pieces are fine. I did that offering to pay (asked how much) and the nice guy said just take what u want...so i picked up all the broken pieces and a few pieces about 8x10..came home washed them a few times,,,then between a hammer, a heavy file,,and some aquarium sealer built some nice cave/ledges etc....
now i am wandering over tomorrow for some shale..to go with those terra cotta flower pots,,to break and put together to build a sort of umm apartment complex for some convicts..
pvc pipe smeared with aquarium sealer then rolled in the gravel (same stuff u will use for sub in the tank) makes great caves as well...

Rams love piles of driftwood ;)

Thought I would post a pic of what the tank looks like now, not sure how easy it is to make out, but there is driftwood on the left and right, and some slate caves in the middle. I put the terra cotta pot in last night, not sure if I like it there though (and my cories decided to make it their home already!!)
