I really like Angelfish and have recently started up a 90 gallon tank with a few different kinds of Angels. Does anyone know of a good book or site that gives descriptions and pictures of all the different kinds. Thanks!

Basically you have Scalare, Altums and Leopoldi
with altums most are wild caught it is the largest of the angels.also very difficult to keep and breed.
scalare is what we typically see in the stores or available..here you can get several color morphs, Koi, Marble, etc. also you can find the silver every once in awhile you can find wild ..I keep peruvian Scalare.. Scalare can reach over 6".
the leopoldi is the other available from time to time..the smallest of the angels(often confused and called dumerilii)

this is also a good source for quality angelfish.

altum- a bit hard to keep, because they are mostly wild caught. get to around 7-8 inches long, the biggest. they are also very tall, easily getting past a foot tall.

scalare- the most common, bred, and kept angel. you can find alot of color forms and fin variants with this one. they are semi-hardy, as they are not as tough as platies but they are not as fragile as discus... they fall somehwere in between. they are pretty easy to keep. if you want a group, get six for best aggression distribution. they get to around 6 inches long.

leopoldi- the smallest of the angels, and the least frequently seen. sometimes called the "dumpy" angel, confused with scalare and sold as a rare variant, or they are confused with wild caught scalare and sold as them. i saw one in a book that was labled as scalare :D

one of my lsf's has peruvian scalare's and brazilian ones. The yalso offer the what they call the dumerilii. how can i be sure if they are leopoldi or not ?

leopoldi aka dumereliis are distinctly different than scalare.the finnage is much less pronounced and the bodys are shaped differently.

the wild peruvian scalre have elegant finage and will carry barring black and brown but not at thick as the Altum.
some of the variants will have a blue /green crest similar to markings on Discus

like I mentioned there are only three distinct recognized angles. (Altum,Scalare, Leopoldii)

there are several color variants of scalare. but they are all still scalare.
