Hey guys, I'm Jordan, 20 year old guy from Wisconsin.
I'm pretty new to aquariums so I'm probably going to have a nice big post filled with lots of questions. :D Anyway, a friend of mine is a pretty big aquarium-enthusiast. Without trying, he slowly got me into wanting an aquarium of my own. I've been trying to do a lot of research on what to do, how to maintain, a lot of basic stuff. I know about cycling the tank, and thoroughly researching fish before you get them, but that is part of my problem, the research...

There are some fish that I'm really attracted to, but I get conflicting info on the same species. Minimum tank size, what you can put in with them, do they like this / opposed to that, live vs pill/flake food, etc. I'm not sure what info to trust with specifics. Also, I'm not sure if the fish I want are too ambitious for my experience level, which is still fairly low.

Right now I have a 10 gallon tank that I have had pretty much unused since I was a kid, it holds water fine (The same friend of mine used it to raise some fish, I lent it to him for a while), and it has an alright filter and stuff. However, I am definitely more attracted to a larger tank, because a lot of the fish I do like require something bigger (50-80 Gallons I usually hear). But I'm not sure if going so large if I'm new is a good idea or not. If I use the 10 gallon to start out with, get a feel for things, I want to have some fish that I'm interested in, you know? Guppies, Golfish, Beta I find boring, personally.

For fish, I love native fish from here in Wisconsin. Pike/Muskie, Bass, Walleye, Perch, Bluegill, stuff like that. Now I know keeping native fish is usually against the rules, that is why I looked up fish that simply look like them (also fish that don't get WAAAAY too big).

Some examples that I really find cool are Pike Cichlids and Needlenose 'Gar'.
Some others I really like would be something like Hujetas and misc mean-looking oddball fish.

So I guess some basic questions I wouldn't mind getting replies on would be:
-Are big tanks too much of a project for the beginner?
-Are fish that I like (pretty much predators) a bit too tough for the beginner?
-Any fish recommendations for me? (Fish that look like Pikes, Bass, Perches, Bluegills, etc, any basic native fish, but smaller)
-Any fish reccomendations for me for a 10 gallon that might fit my tastes, if any?

i will try to find a thread about sunfish that stay under 5 in.!!!

You might want to start out by going to a reputable LFS (possibly one that your friend uses). Look around at what might interest you and ask questions about those particular fish.
