I have a tank that has been up for about a year and a half. It is only a 29 g with a clown, convict goby, and a brittle star. I don't know the wattage of the lights or anything. just what came with it. I was wondering if there are any corals that would be ok in this light and if not what i need to upgrade too. thanks a lot.
You would be able to do non-photosynthetic species (there aren't a ton and they require hand feeding). You might be able to get awy with some softies, mushrooms and polyps. You could of course get away with shrimp. For anything like LPS, SPS, clams etc. you're going to want better lighting. What kind really depends on your budget and what you want to keep.
If it is a green one they eat fish. Lighting can be very expensive. Retrofits would be a good option if you have a canopy you can install them in. T5s are very popular now and if you get the ones with individual reflectors you'll be able to keep just about anything under them in a shallow tank or up near the top half of the tank in a deeper one.
You can also find good deals on used lights. Try the classified here, Craigslist, and your local reef club.
i have a FOWLR setup as well. I have two Sun Corals. I have to feed them but its a breeze (for me at least) they are beautiful and add a nice "coral" effect to my tank. they do not need lighting.
I also have lots of featherdusters and shrimp. I think you should get some of them. they really liven up the tank!
Thanks a lot for help guys. I think i am going to get some feather dusters and start from there.
The brittle star isn't green in color, but now i am starting to worry because he is new to the aquarium and I would hate for him to go after my fish. He looks a lot like the picture and is brown in color... is this anything to worry about?
Don't worry if he isn't green. The blacks and reds seem to be fine but if you're worried read up on them. =)
You'll love feather dusters by the way. It is like watching a flower blooming on film that has been sped up each time they crown. Here is mine from tonight:
Your right grins, I bought a feather duster today and I LOVE IT. Do you feed yours? I was told by lfs employee today that because my tank is established I won't have to worry about feeding it. He also said that my maroon clown might treat it like an anemone and it might be hosted by it... have you ever heard of this. is there anywhere special in a tank that feather duster should be placed?
one last question, do they add much to the bioload? I would like to get a couple more if I could but i only have a 29 gallon.
I fed it when my tank was fallow but now that the fish are back in I'm letting it just filter the leftovers.
Clowns will pretty much try to get anything to host it..inlcuding a powerhead so I'm not surprised about them trying to host a feather on occasion.
I chose to bury the feather..all except the last inch of the tube. I recentlypicked up the one rock to the right and behind it and I noticed it had attached to it under the sand. So it seems happy there. I did take care to not place it too close to where I thought my goby might be making a cave because I didn't want him to bury it in sand. So far...so good.
No, they don't add that much to the bioload in my opinon. I do notice it making waste but it is nominal compared to the fish.

1. i've read that you really should supplement feed them with phytoplankton. i give some every other day or so just to be sure the duster is getting enough food.
2. my clowns killed one duster and have harrasted the other so much that i have to keep it covered (pop bottle) to protect it. guess you never can tell...
3. i've been told to bury the end of the tube in the sand. i have one who has glued itself to the nearest rock. in the 29 gallon there is a beautiful duster (not unlike grins' duster) that is totally attached to the rock way above the sand. so who knows...
