I want to add a few live plants. I was looking at Java moss, water sprite and I would like 1-3 more if I can. I have a 50g corner tank. I will be using this substrate What other plants would you recommend? The tank is pretty tall as well approx 30". What lights should I look at getting? Will I need CO2? or anything else? I am very new to plants I never had one.
Thanks

I would get your equipment before bothering getting plants. 50 gallon is a nice size. You will need at about 100-200 watts over that tank to grow, and pressurized CO2 if you do upgrade the lights. Then you will have to dose fertilizers. That onyx sand is ok, but not the ideal substrate for plants either. They will possible live with use of root ferts too, but it is definitely not the ideal. I would do some reading before running out to buy plants. May I suggest reading here:

www.rexgrigg.com He is a buddy of mine, and has a great overview to your needs when starting a planted tank. You can also take a look at www.barrreport.com He too is a friend, and very knowledgable in troubleshooting most plant issues.

If you want to be successful from the start, it doesn't hurt to research. I read everything I could get my hands on for 4 months before even buying a plant. Nothing is harder than having an empty 90 gal tank and having to be patient enought not to fill it until all ducks were lined up.

Good luck!

Thank you for the info. I am nit jumping into adding plants. I will get all my info and products. For now I will stick with my plastic and silk.

Substrate depends entirely on the plants. Stem plants which I try to stick to, basically use the substrate as an anchor and nothing else, it is all about what plants you plant.
