I've lost 5 of my 6 large hermits over the last 2 weeks. The small hermits are fine but the large ones are dropping :sad

My water is fine and the fish are fine.

SG is 1.023
ph 8.3
ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates < 10

Have you introduceg anything new or changed anything? Just clutching at straws but, that's usually what triggers a die off in my tanks. Especially with one of your top level scavengers they'll eat something before your little guys will get a go.

I agree with Maxilaria, I had a a larege dro poff of snails and hermit crabs (only the bigger ones), and after weeks of pulling my hair out, my lfs asked what other creatures I had noticed... Turns out I had a mantis shrimp in there... i sat up one night and watched it take out yet another hermit crab.......

hth....

ok I'll keep an eye out for anything weird. The snails are all fine and the little crabs are good too...ugh!

I didn't starve 'em did I? I mean there is still some algae on the rock and some of the foods hit the sand and the rock so they'd get some food... I'm just flabbergasted at how I lost $60 worth of crabs with no real reason that I can find...I don't really care that much about the money but I hate losing animals if I can do anything about it:mad:

I also had a mantis killing my hermits. Noticed what I thought was a "molt" moving. Sat and watched as the mantis was eating him. That's the day that I finally caught Mr. Mantis and turned him into food for my brittle star. I had numerous hermits die while he was in there.

I don't see how a b.w. could be a problem for your hermits. Most of the time they stay pretty small and eat detritus. Some of them eat coral and stuff like that . Most of them are good for your tank. I'd guess it's more likely to be some sort of predator or something that they ate.
