low light/low tech scape for goldfish

I've had good success with crypts in my goldfish tank. They also tend to leave swords alone, as well as hygro corymbosa and anubias. Finding goldfish compatible plants is not that difficult, but balancing the nutritional needs of the plants and providing a clean enough environment for a goldfish in such a small tank is gonna be an uphill battle. Though people often say that 20 or 30 gallons is the minimum required size for a single adult fancy goldfish, I have to ask if you would be comfortable reccomending a 30 gallon tank for this ryukin.

oh my god i totally typed this really long message and my internet decided to start pms-ing on me and i lost it.

well it said something like this.
All i see is a big white square...youtube doesn't work on my computer if thats what it was. But i can imagine, check out these guys! http://thegab.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12339&highlight=inch they totally dwarf that 90 gallon aquarium
i see your point tho, i would probably stunt its growth or shorten the life span...probably both. i might just bite the bullet and do this to the 55 gallon...which still might not be big enough. but nothing is happening overnight, i have plenty of time to think about out, and save up money for it...most likely over 6 months...im waiting until i move to do it.

the ryukin in that link was a foot long and weighed between 2 1/2 to 3 lbs

do you guys think that the destructive behaviour of the goldfish might be in its personality or is that just hardwired into goldfish?

anyone?

Goldfish will not inherently destroy plants. They have a tendency to, but it is not a definite. The biggest issue is keeping the goldfish full on a high quality diet that provides everything they need so they don't have a craving for the plants. I use NLS and it does that for mine. The only other diet I have heard of that also does this was used by someone on a goldfish forum who makes her own gel food, so she could put everything needed in it. I have not heard of any other diets doing this.

Many plants are great possibilities. All of my tanks have relatively low lighting. My 75 has just under 1wpg and the plants do very well in there, especially when I had all my fancy goldfish in there. The plants love the waste from the goldfish and help keep the tank cleaner between water changes. Plants that have worked for me include: anacharis, moneywort, water wisteria, vals, moss balls, cabomba, and many others. I suggest just trying out whatever your LFS has, see what works.

Yes, that tank size is an issue. Please check out the articles in my blog on goldfish (seems you already have), and a newer one on stocking an aquarium.

All my tanks are planted and all have Estes' Marine Sand as a substrate. I use the following Flourish products as the only fertilizers (nice and simple): Tabs, general liquid supplement, and Iron (a few plants showed signs of iron deficiency).

Thanks Reptileguy! yeah...i was thinking that i could upgrade...but i guess i might as well just start big.
Did you get your marine sand offline or at your lfs?

We carry it at the LFS I work at. Estes is a common company, most places just carry their gravel, not the sand. If they carry the gravel they can special order the sand for you. If they don't carry it make sure you ask if they can special order it. It is safe for freshwater tanks, it is not a true marine substrate. There is a whole article on sand in my blog as well.

thanks :)
do you think that planting some plants with this method would be worth a try? and then i could keep the tank a bare bottom? it wouldn't be as pretty, but it would be cheaper...?
