Low light plants?

I know the lighting in my tank isn't the best, though I do manage to keep water lettuce alive along with one plant. What would people here suggest as good plants, simple in appearance, for growing well in a medium to low light tank? I also wouldn't mind something unusual in appearance, mostly greens, wouldn't mind a little color so long as it's not the rust red sort.
 
Oh, also looking for something sizeable to float in it for my newt to climb on. I was thinking a larger water lettuce than what I havem but if anyone knows of something different for variety, I'd be very appreciative.
 
Any type of Java Fern and Java moss would do well in a low light tank. Also, most species of Anubias would work too. I have Giant Hygrophila that I absolutly can't kill. It has survived, but not neccasarily thirved, in low light tanks.

As for floating plants I might take a look at a tiger lotus. Everyonce in awhile they will shoot up a leaf to the top of the water but I have never had one of mine do that. I also don't know if they will do that in lower light.

I have heard of people floating water sprite to give their newts something to float on.
 
Brazilian pennywort should be a great floating plant for newts and fry, it forms a miniature lily pad and has extensive water roots. If left floating, it will do well even with low light since it's close to the lightsource.
 
^_^ Thanks for the help and suggestions. I ended up getting a water lettuce of a nice size for now from a local nursery, cleaned it up good to make sure it didn't have things harmful to the fish and have it in temporarily. I did order a tiger lotus though.
 
it's a bit hard to find, but crystalwort would fill in your needs qutie nicely. no specific light requirements, floats around partially above the water, can shelter fry, i'd be the perfect plant for you! it's a bit hard to find as I just said, you could check out aquabid or liveaquaria.com if you really want some.

tiger lotus needs at least medium light to grow. mine tries to shoot up a lily pad every week, but if you let the pad grow then the bottom of the plant wont, all of its energy is used for the pad and they darken the tank.
 
Aaah! Fishcatch, I looked up pictures and it's so beautiful! XD I'm going to end up overplanting my tank if I can get ahold of any.
