low light reef?

I am working on setting up my reef tank

I couldnt afford a new hood so I just bought the best bulb I could fit into my stock hood that I could find

its a 10,000k coralight bulb. and it seems extremely bright to me.. but its only 40watts

its in a 55g tank.. but the tank has a fairly low water level due to my sump

im probably at about 1WPG according to the bulb.. but it does seem really bright to me....

what kinds of corals etc if any can I grow under this lighting?
 
Watts per gallon rule does not apply to marine keeping as corals have such a varied requirement..

You'll be ok with most low light corals like shrooms, zoa's, leathers etc etc.

Anything other than that...And honestly with only 40w over a 55, I think you'd have trouble even with mushrooms.

There are a fair number of non-photosynthetic corals that can do well regardless of light level, however. Several species of gorgonians and Tubastraea spp. are the first that come to mind. Just keep in mind that many of those corals will require daily target-feeding.

Its your local reef club...they are good to join in on for fun and educational meetings. At the same time you meet some very nice people who go as far as sharing frags, equipment for sale, and even come to your house and help.

Friends in my local club literally drive over to members houses to help build things for fellow reefers..that's how nice they can be. =)

I didnt answer your question I know..it was covered...but I figure I share with you about the local club..and website they are on.

I just ordered the best fixture I can afford right now

it is a dual T5 fixture... I got a 54w 10,000k, and a 54w actinic for it

thinking it should be a lot better
