I am very saddened to hear about your betta, especially because his death could have been avoided -- even a small, temporary tank would have been better than being nipped to death. Sounds to me like you need to find a new fish store if they did not help you set up your tank properly! I hope your other fish do well.
Bettas can do well in community tanks.. I have one male betta in a 10 gallon with harlequin rasboras, zebra danios, an otocinclus, and some dwarf cory cats -- they all get along happily.
