If live rock is used to filter would there be any benifit to putting some small pieces in the sump?I am not talking about a fuge just a sump where it is relatively dark at all times.

Yes, Most people add it to a sump for additional denitrification. It's kind of a way to add more live rock without taking out more swimming space. I don't know what sort of set up your going to run but, if there are a lot of active fishes in it adding someto your sump would certainly help a little. You could also add a colony of copepods and other little detriovors to help deal with detritus problems. I don't know how big your sumps going to be but, with l.r. you can do all sorts of things. I'm not sure that this is what your asking but, yes it can do lot. On the other hand if you have a reef it probably won't make that much difference in the long term because the nitrate conversion by the the l.r. already in the tank would be pleanty.

I recently re-aquascaped the left side of my tank and pulled out about 30-40 pounds of live rock. I put it in my sump and was planning to sell it later, but now I've decided to keep it - it's extra biofiltration and I built it up into a wall between the skimmer and return pump which has reduced the microbubbles a little bit. Other additional benefits are the increased pod population and it provides a home for the bad crabs that I remove from the main tank.

I have a small 20 gallon sump under my 142 gallon tank. I will add some LR but can i put detriovors in the sump also without light and any substrate? I have a yellow tang, flame angel, two clarkiis, and a royal gramma. My plan is a FOLR setup, i say plan because 6 months ago my plan was only a 55 gallon. Man this hobby is addicting.

yes sure you can but detriovores in there if you add enough live rock there should be lots of places for them to hide. They really don't need any light to thrive,"or the micro fauna that you'd want anyway". I wouldn't add anything that really needed light ,"crabs, shrimpt, little brittle stars etc.,unless you can provide enough light for them to see. There are a couple of places on line that sell collections of these critters. I don't how your sump is plumbed or what your water movement in there is like. I wouldn't put any l.r. in there that had a lot of growth on it either. Because you will be defeating the purpose of adding l.r. to your sump.
