I will be setting up my tank soon and a friend of mine has offered me his LR from his tank. Unfortunately he has neglected his tank and gha is rampant. Should I tank the rock and dry it out and reseed it or try to use it as is and keep my water params in check and hope to choke out the gha? I'd hate to pass up on LR, but I don't know if it is a wise risk.

Its certainly do-able in my opinion...I would remove as much of the algae by pulling it out by hand and scrubbing with a nylon brush, and wash it off in saltwater before getting it in the tank...

Keep good water params, using preferably RO water...If there is nothing else in the tank, you can always just leave the lights off, start to starve it of the nutrients...

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the quick reply. My tank isn't set up yet, so I was thinking of trying the LR during the cycle period. Yes I will be using RO/DI from the beginning so this should help. If I leave the light off and keep up with the params during the cycle I should be able to snuff it out. I'd just hate to start off on the wrong foot.

I suppose its all down to how good a deal it is on the live rock..If its a awsome deal, then if it was me, i would go for it, deal with hair algae while your cycling, no need for any lighting anyway through the cycle..

But, thats just me, i dont mind the extra effort...

Grins thats what I did per Niko's suggestion way back when and it worked like a charm.. I haven't had an issue with LHA at all... But then I also transported it like 3 hours in a covered garbage can and had die off on the rock as well.. So I also had to wait for it to cure..

The Coraline came back fairly quickly and I now scrape it from the glass in mass quantities.. In fact I got a razor scraper as a stocking stuffer and was able to get the back glass today.. :D
