With my limited experience in only using Shell’s Kryton rubber, this is potentially true. My formulation work with rubber did find that natural rubber does absorb plastisizers quicker than the synthetic Shell’s rubbers. But regardless, both are effected by petroleum based oils and that effect is negative.
You are also correct in that Silicone based products are not biodegradable. But if they don’t enter the water system of the aquarium, who cares! They are not soluble in water and therefore stay with the rubber. Ergo, they NEVER become toxic (as if they were toxic to begin with).
I’m really done with this. If you wish to use Vaseline, or whatever, go for it.
