Ok....so for those of you who have read some of my threads, you probably know I have a black moor named Lydia. I assumed she was female, because she had an outward facing vent and her tummy was round. Granted, all moor's have round tummies. But still it was round, I tell you! She liked to nuzzle my comet's butt all the time but we thought she was just playing. I never saw any tubercles or anything on her to make me think otherwise. Then, today, I look at her in the tank while she's right up at the front of the glass saying hi for the morning, and there they are.....TUBERCLES on her fins! Just little and barely there, and only on her front fin ridges. Ratchet is still too young to tell what he is, he has no outward signs. Anyways, I guess I have a couple questions.

I have no idea how old Lydia actually is. Is it possible that she's just coming into adulthood, and may go back and forth for a bit? I've never heard of such a thing, but hey, thought I'd check.

How can she have an outward facing vent AND tubercles? I checked, and it's still there.

Vent says girl, tubercles says boy. What is she? (Sorry tried to get a picture of the tubercles, but she wasn't having it.)

GUYS I'M SO CONFUSED!!! :thud:

OH NOOOO!!! LOL- I can't help you, here... I can't sex goldfish. (why does that sound so wrong?) Well, if she does turn out to be a he- you can always call him Wesker, and he'll be totally cool & butt kicking? Honestly, it would be better if your moor were male, and your comet were a female, though... or both the same gender. From what I understand, a female moor (or most fancies) that have to endure the spawning advances of a male comet have a strong chance of ending up belly up from it. :(

Not at all trying to be preachy, condescending, or negative with my above comment. I know you just really care about your fish, and that is something that WOULD concern you, if it did start to happen. ;)

Oh no you're fine. :) Yeah, I did think of that when I first saw it....I still have to rename them though. So I guess I'm both happy and sad.

Does anyone know if, because Lydia is chasing Ratchet, that means Ratchet is probably a girl, since he/she is not mature yet? Or is Lydia just being a boy and uh....chasing tail? Buh-dum-bum-pssssshhhh!

Can't really answer this for you... at all. Anything I would say would only be a guess, so, not really relevant. A good person to ask would be Somervell, though... she is GREAT with all things goldfish (has been keeping them for 20+ years, and is also very, very nice), and has bred them, so, she's a pretty good bet to ask with the gender stuff, too. Maybe she'll pop on, or, she's on my page as a friend- you could try sending her a PM. She is very helpful.

I gave up on sexing any of my fish. If babies happen so be it! I also quit giving them gender specific names because like you, I was more times confused than not! :nilly:

Good luck on whatever it works out to.

Thanks guys. :)

Their names don't fit each other the other way around....their personalities are just too different.

Anyways, just in case any of you care/were wondering, Lydia has been tentatively named Batman (blame the boyfriend, lol!) and Ratchet is now Samus, aka Sammi for short.

I don't know much about goldfish. Can the two you have reproduce together? I have a thing about breeding, I just love everything about it.
