I think I'm going to go to the pet store today and get 2 shrimp and a clam. Do you guys think the clam is a bad idea. I've heard they die easily.

What kind of shrimp? Ghost shrimp and cherry shrimp are common and pretty easy to care for. You could easily fit 2 in your tank.
What kind of clam? I dont know that there are any freshwater clams, but even so, youd need to do lots of research to find out the appropriate foods and substrates for one.

Those shrimp have very little bio load, you could fit more than 2 in there. Yup, there are FW clams. Not sure about their care though. When I was a kid we caught a couple and they didn't live long.

I was thinking ghost shrimp. Don't woory I've been doing lots of research about the FW clams.

ghost shrimp are great! They really made a difference in keeping my tanks cleaner. I lost all of them in a recent salt treatment for ich, and the amount of waste on the bottom (mostly broken up food) is so much more. They're not hard to care for, as long as your tank is cycled and mature.

Besides that, they're tons of fun to watch! I had two shrimps, father and daughter, who would both turn upside-down at the surface to catch flakes. They didn't learn this from each other, as he died right after she settled from the larval planktonic stage to the baby shrimp stage. So maybe it was genetic? Neat, whatever it was.

I think I'm just gonna get 3 ghost shrimp. Do they eat scraps of food that come down or should I give food to them. And when you say use lost them due to salt. Can I have salt in my aquarium.

The FW clams are interesting. The only problem I've ever had with them is right after shipping. They either die or they'll live... The ones that survive shipping and the next couple of days will do great. I've had mine for over a year now and they're all fine. Generally, I'd say you'll lose 30% during or right after shipping.

If you can get them locally, great!!!

Three ghost shrimp sounds like a great addition to your tank! Get a sm. bag of sinking pellets or wafers and you should be set. Theres no need to have salt continuously in your FW tank, so you should be fine. But, if you need to use it to treat for something, I guess you should get the shrimp out during that time.

Make sure you give you the shrimp some hiding places. They are very vulnerable to predation immediately following a molt. They need a place to chill out while their exoskeletons harden.

Also, they'll be fine with eating scraps of flake food that make it to the bottom.
And you can get a few more if you like. They really make no impact on the bioload. Just don't get a ridiculous number of them. I wouldn't get any more than five or six for a tank that size, simply because there's only so much space on the bottom for them.
