Made the switch...Cichlids to Tropical

I removed all my Cichlids from the 300 gallon this weekend and I am in the process of restocking it with Tropical schools and other small freshwater fish.

Today I bought:

4 Panda Cory's
2 Pearl Gouramis
6 Black Neon's
6 Cherry Barbs
12 Von Rio Tetra's

I plan to add 6 more Cherry barb's and 6 more Black neon's as well as
4 Dojo's/Weatherloach

I am going to need a nice big school of Top level swimmer's and a few Mid level swimmers as well.

I would like to hear some suggestion's from you guy's on what would be the best and most attractive to fill that bill.

The tank is heavily planted with Silk plants and lots of real driftwood.
Temp. is 78 degree's with a Ph. around 7.6

wow and i thought i was crazy for the 120 i am doing.... basically any fish your going to add you need 20-30 to even see it. there is countless options for that. lots of different small rainbows danios rasboras and tetras.

I love the idea of HUGE schools of tetras. Do a big school of rummynose tetras. They school together really tightly and show up really well with their little red noses.

Sounds like a great tank! Post pictures so we can all be jealous!

Get a large school of marble hatchets for the top 20+ make sure the lid is on tight though :lol: That is gonna be a sick tank make sure and post some pics

I think my 100gal looks strange with schools of small fish. Cannot imagine a tank 3X my tanks size with small fish.

Congo tetras would be a nice 'centerpiece' school. The males get to about 3 inches and swim in the midwaters.

I have schools of between 10-14 fishes, you could have schools of 30 (except for the Congos).

There are some larger (small-fish-safe) cichlids too --Festivums, Keyholes, Rainbow cichlids, ect.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I have x'ed any more Cichlids from my list. This 300g is a lot more work than
the smaller tanks I am used to and cleaning up after cichlids has become a real pain.
They are either moving and pileing up gravel or digging up plants.
Not to mention the fast rate they grow.
So I am sticking with smaller school's of fish. This will give me the action I need in the tank to create a real show piece and with the reward of minimum tank maintence.

100 gallon water changes is time consuming enough. I only have a 40 gallon water heater, and re-entering 78 degree water takes a while when you have to wait for the water to re-heat.

But it's well worth it. The 300g is awesome.
