Mafia Game Strategy 101

Thanks for the input Mad, I didn't mean it to come across as day 1 being a waste. Quite the opposite, I think for all the banter and goofing around on the surface, you can get quite a good read on someone from day 1 play. It's why I always go back and re-read the day 1 stuff, even if it seems as fluffy as kittens playing on clouds.

No, I didn't think that you were saying that D1 was a waste. I was just being unclear.

I think that by highlighting D1 as special, you're already minimizing it's importance compared to the days that follow. Lotsa vets already think that way....no sense instilling that thinking in newbies from the get-go. When everyone tries harder on D1, you get better information.

I'll give it some thought nothing comes to mind. To me strategy varies with the situation and the person you are dealing with. Many times I find myself in disagreement with the popular view. I never see banter as a waste because you need to give people a chance to slip up.

My most basic rule is tell is tell as much truth as possible, even when scum. Obviously as scum you do need to lie on ocassion but lying should be used in moderation.

Always proof read your posts.

Ok, good point. I'll remove the day 1 stuff from the final version. Thanks!

Hey all!

I know the last couple of times I have played I signed up knowing I did not have enough time to devote to the game and I think it showed in my gameplay. Sometimes people may feel like they have to sign up when in reality they don't have the time. Perhaps mods would be kind enough as to design games every once and a while that do not need as many players but still work out to be enjoyable for those playing. That way only those who are going to be committed to playing ahead of time can sign up.

A game of 14+ players is a blast but when only half of them are consistent posters it just ruins it for those putting in the time. I wouldn't doubt that a lot of those not playing signed up because the mod was looking to fill a spot and they felt like the had to join so people didn't have to wait. I know I am guilty of pressuring people into playing because I needed X amount of players but it doesn't exactly help to have dead weight on a team.

Anyways, I am still debating on whether I am playing the next round since I have all next week off of school. As I read through last game I was almost convincing myself that I was happy to have left for a break when I did. Hopefully discussion like this will lead us in the right direction but it only helps if it is given to people who actually want to improve their game, not just post crap because they can. I don't want to single anyone or any group out but the level of maturity seems to have declined. And that's not just in behavior but in typing as well. Seriously, you don't have to be perfect but punctuation and capitalization (*gasp*) go a long way. If people cannot understand what you are saying then there is no point in posting, or playing at all for that matter. Yes, we are on an internet forum but as Lab said people playing these games expect a level of intelligence and maturity from the participants.

I do hope that mafia has not run its course at AC. It was said a long, long time ago that we wouldn't even make it close to where we are now. I still have faith we can get to #100.

There's also a Sherlock Holmes quote that fits:

"It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts."

I've often seen innocent vets read a tone that wasn't there or unconsiously twist facts to fit their theory. When we invest too much in our theories it tarnishs our view of the facts. Keep an open mind don't be too impressed with your own theory.

I think the problem is that with experience comes the knowledge that there are ways a person could be fooling you. Everyone's been duped in the past and sometimes we let that get to us and go off on it...

But I would much rather have someone come up with a theory that is wrong but still supported than for that person to not do anything.

Jpap, do you know of any formats, aside from the Assassins in the Palace, that can run well with few players?

Mad, I know you'd mentioned doing one with aliases in a chat format that could run in one evening. Something like that could be a lot of fun and something different to change things up.

:uhoh: That is so totally me...especially when it falls into place soooo perfectly. And then I talk myself into believing it's totally true, when in reality it's not. :footinmouth:

I forgot that I had mentioned that awhile back....maybe this winter. Even then we'll still probably have one of the user_names UD. :D
