I'm setting up said filter on a 10 gallon. This might seem like overkill, but for the past year the whisperer I had has proven so pitifully incompetent, that I've decided to use the Magnum, which I've had lying around for some time. I bought it used, saw that it was in working condition before I bought it 3 months ago.

I have all of the parts connected and plugged in, but the water won't start flowing through the system. The tubing is straight up and down from the filter to the tank - are there any tricks to get the suction started?

Thanks

Ashley

Even if you get it to work, I think you will turn your 10 gal tank into a whirlpool.

i'm curious as to how your whisper filter has proven incompetent.. i have one on my 20 gallon and it works great.

well, there is still junk all over the bottom. I siphon weekly, but it just isn't enough - it seems like no matter how much I vacuum, I can't get enough of it up. And today, I saw a little worm in the water, and I know that's a sign of poor water. I don't overfeed.

It might turn into a whirlpool, but I'm willing to risk it for cleanliness, even if it means leaving it on for just a few hours every few days to get some of the stuff out.

There's water in the filter - I guess it's the impeller, although water is going halfway up the output tube.

i'm willing to bet you are overfeeding. planaria and the like don't eat unfiltered poo, they eat uneaten food.

with that much gunk on the bottom, i'm curious as to what your ammonia/trite/trate levels are.

well, it was overstocked until yesterday when I brought the 5 hatchetfish back to the lfs. I've updated my sig - in the 10 gallon, there are 3 otos, 2 female bettas, and 1 shrimp. It's not overstocked anymore, right? Please correct me if I am wrong

I will feed less :) I will also tell everyone else in the house to not feed:wall: thats probably the main problem, actually

you know, I got it to work, and the flow isnt too much, I don't think. It's pretty heavily planted, and I have the output facing directly into one of the glass sides. I think it'll be okay. If the fish look exhausted, I'll switch back over

Thanks everyone! I appreciate it

Ensure the suction inlet is fully submerged and cycle it on and off several times, allowing the air to escape.

That's exactly how I got it to work - switching it on and off. And also unplugging the suction inlet from the tubing; for some reason, doing that made water from the filter fill the intake tube, and then I put the inlet back on and turned it on, the new placement of the water was enough to start up some good stable suction
