If you own a magnum I was just wondering which media do you use the micron cartrige or the carbon container? If you use the carbon container , do you guys use carbon?

I always use the water polishing pleated cartridge and drop in re-sealable bags of media on the outside of the cartridge, since there is plenty of room to do so. I usually use carbon.

I use the container filled with floss most the time, and the pleated cartridge for water polishing when needed.

The pleated cartridge can clog pretty quick, especially after you stir things up with a gravel vac. You can buy foam sleeves that fit over the pleated cartridge to keep them from clogging too quick.

Carbon on all of them with the filter sleeve. Most have bio wheels on the discharge. The one I use for all has the micron for polishing.

Just FYI ... I emailed Marineland about the magnums with the micron filter being able to filter out the ick parasite, and the guy said yes. Good to know!

The guy did say that the micron filter clogs fast and needs to be recharged at the most after one week for an average tank. But I already knew that. I think most people keep at least 3 micron filters on hand: one in use, one being cleaned, and one dried and ready to go.

I only use the micron carts in my HOTs. I think it is the best bang for the buck mech filtration available. If you really want to make the water sparkle, you can add 2 tablespoons of DE.

On the two tanks that run HOTs full time I rotate in a new micron every 2 weeks, but I also prefilter the intakes with sponges.

I also use a 3rd HOT as my tank Vac. This allows me to vac my heavily planted tanks at a nice slow pace w/o emptying them.

My 4th Hot is kept on the shelf for emergency use.

If I wanted to use a Magnum as the sole filter on a tank, I would run the micron and the bio-wheels.
