when i was a kid, my mom had me take care of the tank like your wife thinks. I hated it. I said I'd never have fish again. Then I fell back into it because of 1 betta, and doing it the right way- not tearing everything down to wash- is soooooooo much more enjoyable!!! I spend more time than 10 min a week- I think that is an understatement of those authors. I think you'd want to spend more. You are the caretaker of a little mini world.
Just remember have patience, don't go reacting with crazy changes when you see a problem. Don't clean too many things at once- I cleaned a clogged filter and decided to vaccum while doing a water change and through off the balance of my cycled tank. Small changes are best unless you have deadly levels of something and even then, a water change is the best solution. Stick to this site and ask a lot of questions- even the seemingly stupid ones and you'll have a lot of luck.
