Apple snails are aided by lung and gills. They have both systems therefore there is no use for the shells to enable them to breathe.

That's not entirely what I meant.

I know they don't use their shell to breathe. By breathe I meant the exchange of gases. As in when someone talks about letting a wound breathe- means allowing gas exchange over the would so anaerobic bacteria doesn't decay around the wound.

Snail have gills which can take some oxygen out of the water.

If they're painted and have their trapdoor closed- there would be limited water flow through the shell. I don't know if gasses can pass through the shell or not.

It is just speculation but I don't know if snail shells allow gases from water outside the shell to pass in the shell... obviously if this was the case you wouldn't want to paint it. I doubt this is the case- but I wouldn't want to do any shell painting without knowing first.

... not that I would anyway out of personall preference.
