MAKEING a CUSTOM tank

my father wants to make me a tank....a traditional rectangle tank....

hes going to take 5 pecies of glass and stick them together....but the only problem is that what kind of GLUE or SEALANT should use to make is the srtongest...

and please tell me if you have ever made one of these.....and what was the turnout????

Silicone is the only sealant to use on glass.

There are a few fish-safe silcones out there. But, I have to recommend GE Silicone I. Make sure you do not get one with an anti-mold or anti-fungal ingredient as it will kill your fish.

Will this tank be larger than what is already available? If not, then it's unlikely to be any cheaper than buying an already made tank, just in case cost is a factor. Unless you're going for a custom shape, rectangular tanks from the manufacturer are much cheaper in the long run.

In my experience, anything under a 4ft tank is cheaper to just go out and buy. Larger than this size though, the cost margin between store-bought and DIY begins to heavily favor the DIY side.


I personally wouldnt build any DIY tank under about 125 gallons or so. Below this size, the price difference isnt worth it to me.

How Large of a tank does your father want to make? Is this a father-son/daugher project?? (sorry couldn't tell by your name) If so I'd say if your dad wants to do it even if its not cost effecient do it anyway. Just make sure you use 100% silicone you can find it at most LFS and online but HomeDepot or lowes will carry it also. Just make sure its 100% silicone and it says on the back that its safe for fish.
