ive got a 10 neons in my heavily planted 3' tank, along with loads of different fish, nehow how do i make these fish shoal, any tricks? they all seem so secure that they swim around on their own or in 2s. when they rarely do come together...at feeding time they look great. any ideas?

Its a good thing that they aren't feeling the need to school. It means that they are happy, secure, and feel no immenent danger of being attacked. Short of doing something to reverse these feelings (like taking away plant cover or adding nippy, big, or scary fish) I don't see how you can change it.

I agree, My 7 danios schooled for a few days... now they stay in pairs most of the time... My 11 neons kept a tight formation for the first few days, now they stay in groups of 3-4 half the time, the other half they run into each other and school for a bit then break up in 2-3 groups...

It'd be nice to have them school constantly but ( unless you do some of the above things) they'll do there own thing, which is good, if not as pretty ;)

if you want them to shoal, you'll need a lot more thant 10, they do shoal my nature, but there would be dozens, if not hundreds of fish.
the minimum i got to shoal was 20, but you'll have to slowly increase the numbers to get the disired effect, or just add a *****y fish:p

I've had up to 11 neons in my 90g tank that didn't school together. Too peaceful. I currently have 7 cardinal tetras that don't either. I'm about to add 3 angels to the community so we'll see what happens. The angels are small and the cardinals are adults.
I also have 7 rummy-nose tetras and they school together most of the time. Others have reported the same.

they

have to feel the need to shoal and they wont do it much in a 10 maybe if you get a small gourami it will scare them into it

Exactly what I was thinking.... More are needed, watch the tank size if adding more. On the other hand, when scared, they will group together more..

cheers guys. i don't really want to scare my fish so i may do a bit of swapping and changing of my stock so i can add more to increase their numbers. thanks again
