Has anyone ever tried making something similar to this:

But for a saltwater tank??? I'm converting one of my tanks over to a fish-only saltwater tank. I planned on using the same vinyl guttering/aquarium safe silicone used in the plans (I've done this a bunch of times in freshwater tanks), but rather than sticking lava rock to the gutter material, I was going to use Crushed Coral instead, making it look like 1 big piece of coral w/holes in it.

I think it would look awesome when I was done, but I was curious if this was a good/bad idea, and why???

Check out http://www.garf.org they have quite a bit of info on making your own live rock. As far as your idea goes. I say try it, just make sure to circulate the area well.
Good luck and please post pics.

I think I will try it. I don't see how the saltwater could have any ill-effects on the rock, if I use rock meant to be used in salt-water acquariums (i.e. crushed coral).

I'm gonna give it a shot, and I will definately post pics when I'm done.

Has anyone ever tried this, or am I going to "boldly go where no man has gone before"??

I dunno dude but if you find the final frontier please let people know.... And post the pics too :duh:

Hi

I have have seen plenty of these and it works great.I am from a town called Nelspruit in South Africa and our LFS has been doing these for very long. What he actually does is mix a sort of cement and covers the whole back glass with it them puts on a couple of dead hard corals that stand out nicely and after that finishes it of by covering all the cement with sand.finely crushed coral etc. This give a tank a really nice background. He is actually starting on my new tank soon so I will post some pics of the process.

Wow!!!

Van,

That sounds awesome. A bit more complex then I need. I'm looking to mae something more like the link I included in the previous post, because It would be removable for cleaning time!!!!

I'm gonna strategically cut the holes so that my filer is fully functional, and then I'm going to include some power heads behind there so that nothing gets trapped.

I don't see why this wouldn't work. The only thing I can't find information on is whether there will be any ill effects of using vinyl guttering in a saltwater tank. My only other materials will be aquarium-safe silicone (which per the title is aquarium safe), and crushed coral which will be stuck onto the silicone.

I think it will work out great. Maybe If I have time and am bored, I'll do a step by step process. We'll see.
