A 20g is too small for malawi cichlids. I wouldn't recommend putting them in anything really smaller then a 55g. Malawi mbuna are quite aggressive and will attack eachother if housed in too small a tank. Haps are more peaceful but get too large and need ltos of open swimming room.

If you could find them there is a species of malawi shell dweller. http://malawicichlids.com/mw09007t.htm I've only seen these a few times and they aren't very common.

Is this tank going to be a show tank just for the school project? Or will it be kept running after the project too?

Are you set on doing malawi africans? Lake tang sehllies woudl make an interesting project and woudl fit in a 20g better.

Try looking at that site if you are interested in them.

But i second what Valerie said, 20g is much too small for these fish. I feel a trio of yellow labs (labidochromis caeruleus) could be housed in a 30g but i would say nothing smaller than that.

They are rock dwelling fish (the mbuna are anyways) and sand is thier native substrate. They will readily pick apart most plants, but vallis and anubia have been known to work.

there is not a tank actually been set up its a writen project and hopefully we will be able to put it online

the 20g tank bit

im just doing it on speieces that will live happy in a 20g tank

I can't think of any species of Malawi cichlids that are commonly available in the pet trade that would be appropriate for a 20 gallon tank.

Some people keep shell dwellers from Lake Tanganika in smaller tanks; they would probably do OK in 20. Not Malawis, though.

im not very good with stockin tanks

any other cichlids you would recomend to do my writen project on

Do it on Lake Tangynikan Shelldwellers, trust me, it'll make a great project. I keep them and they are awesome cichlids. I believe they are the world's smallest cichlids? L. Ocellatus, that is.

:p

Rams, kribs, apistos are other cichlids that would fit in a 20 gallon.
