Malawi time!

I ditched the idea of the Brichardi when I realized they were Tangs. I'm gonna try to keep this Malawi-only. I'm starting to consider only Mbuna also. I haven't decided completely yet. I suppose it will also depend on what fish the stores around here have in stock.

I kinda wish I could find more rocks like that in my yard. I got them all though. I want to be able to stack them a bit higher. I'll search more tomorrow for sure. Definitely beats $2.99 per pount at the LFS though!

mbuna are my far some of the most aggressive africans. You will need about 12-15 to calm them in that tank. Most the icchlids from lake malwai are agressive. Hope you tested your backyard rocks for metals and such. Try a landscaping yard, very cheap. IMO lake tang have some the most peaceful cichlids. Most peacocks are mild tempered and have great color. Good luck and keep up the research.

lol............(:thud: Sorry, just got the a picture in my head........lol.... of living next door to you, and found you running riot in my back yard in the middle of the night, making a right noise!!!!!).

Hope your neighbour's don't have dog's!!!......lol!!!

I hope u get them though!!!
Let us know how you get on, & Take care!!....lol!!

CajunCC, I think your original stocking plan -- about 6 fish -- is good for a 55 stocked with mbuna. I agree that yellow labs are colorful and suited for a tank that size, as are Ps. scolofi, which are a pretty blue. (Ps. demasoni are also a very pretty blue, but they are aggressive little guys and they do better in larger colonies than you can keep in a 55.) You could probably also add a trio or quartet of small synodontis catfish, like Synodontis petricola. Those guys are quite active and sociable in groups of three or more, and they get along with mbuna quite well.

Jim

Nice tank. I like the rocks. When you get some fish gives us some more pic's!!! :thm:

Welp. It's done. The cycle is finished, the water is clear and the fish are in!

I ended up with 3 each of the following:
-Pseudotropheus sp. "acei"
-Melanochromis johanni
-Labidochromis caeruleus

I hope to have closeup pictures of the fish soon. Probably after they've had a few days to brighten up and such. They're HARD to get on camera. Li'l guys just never stop moving! They're already going nuts for food. I fed them New Life Spectrum growth formula tonight. That might be what I stick with, since they seem to go after it like crazy. Any other food suggestions?
