Malaysian Trumpet snail question

I just got trumpet snails from a friend. Mine are all white though. They don't bury themselves as deep as what you all are referring to. They stay on top the majority of the time. Are these Malaysian or another species?

I have MTS in 3 tanks with sand. The oldest has been going for ~ 2 years...no gas problems so far....but I do have LOT of MTS in there!

PM me if you need some MTS.

I should market a new substrate...50/50 sand/MTS :)

MTS are the ones that have a long, pointy, trumpet-shaped shell. Mine tend to come up out of the substrate and onto the sides of the tank, decor, etc. if I forget to turn the heater back on and the temp drops or if they are looking for food. Otherwise, they are almost always in the gravel (was going to have sand and got them in advance, sand didn't work out 'cause of mold and junk in the play sand and got gravel instead).

Try to make sure to throw in a couple algae wafers once or twice a week to be sure they aren't starving, unless you have a major algae problem.

Try to keep your sand around 1.5 inches deep. At that depth there is less chance of gas buildup, or so I've been told.

How do you know if there's too much gas? I have yet to go to a pool store and buy some pool sand but I'll definably take you up on your offer kj5kb when I do.
