Male Convict and ??

I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with any other fish being in the same tank as a male convict? I've tried an RTBS (3 times) with no luck. I used to have a Jewel which worked quite well but lost it in a recent move. :sad I tried another jewel......unfortunately no luck. The weird and strange thing is that I have a sunset gourami in there with it that seems to be the one thing that will survive with my convict???? Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

PS- whenever I add fish I re-arrange the tank to "rid" the territorial behaviour of the convict.
 
can you take the convict OUT.....your adding fish to his territory. If you can take him out when you do a water change move things around and then add the new fish.....let the new fish establish itself and then add the convict back in to the tank. This way everyone is getting a new environment and can establish their own place. I hope this might work.

i'm havin good luck with my rainbow shark with my male convict, they get along very well and they are the only ones in that tank well if all else fails u can keep trying
 
There are alot of compatibility questions on the forum, does any know a site where you can look up this sort of thing.?
www.fishprofiles.com had somestuff but lacks detail of each fish.
 
female convict... people always talk about how its such a hassle because they're always breeding and you have fry everywhere but if you have another tank or one of your friends does it turns out to be free food and convicts are such great parents and I love watching them interact.

I think your info you said hes in a 33 gal? if he is wow! he kills everything else! thats why i love cons the only time my con met his match was with a male auratus that ended up killing the con, that was a sad day.
 
yes, there has been quite a debate and/or discussion on what works well with convicts. I went to Aquaria Central's species profiles and clicked on "tank mates" to see what works best. Sometimes this may not be the case, there are many variables in the equation. As JoeHox28 says, I may try a female convict. I know my 33gal. isn't really the biggest for cichlids in general, but I would like 1 other tank mate in there at least,( sorry about your con :sad ) I believe it's possible. 31337 - thanks for the link....... :)
 
Just a small note but I wouldnt pay to much attention to that fish profiles site when it comes to tank mates I looked on there before out of interest and found it quite stupid on a number of suggestions. i.e it said a suggested tank mate for my severum was neons! yeah if I wanted to feed it!!!!
As for your convict I agree try seperating it from the tank while your new fish gets settled then reintroduce. I have found this way works best after an unfortunate incident with an angel fish lasting less than 24 hours.
The problem is with a lot if Cichlids is the older they get the less tolerent they become and often only except tankmates that they were introduced to as juveniles.

thanks CAT, after careful consideration I think I will try that. When I first got the cichlids, I bought a female and male convict, a jewel and a RTBS.
They all were very young and "grew up" together peacefully. All hell broke lose when I tried to add 1 more cichlid (Lab. freibergi - it was mislabeled at the LFS). It never did settle down and I first lost my RTBS. When I moved, I lost the jewel and the female convict. Now all I have is the male convict and somehow I still have a sunset gourami in there that seems to be doing fine (he/she has been in there and endured all the stress since day 1).
