I've read in books and heard advice never to keep two male labyrinths together. This is obvious with Bettas, but I was wondering about dwarf gourami? I have a ten gallon tall and was looking into some more color than my other tanks have and I really like the look of the gourami, and since dwarfs do not get too large, I considered them. I'd really like to stay away from breeding, since I don't want to have to deal with fry, so I'd rather not have a female, but is getting a pair of males instead alright?

It is possible to keep two male drawf gouramies in the same tank, as long as:
  • You have enough floor space (wich you don't have much of in a tall tank)
AND
  • You have lots of plants and decor to be used as territory markers

Personally, I wouldn't keep two male gouramies in a 10g tall, becuase of the lack of floor space, and the fact that I'm going with the books (and have been for quite some time, and haven't gone wrong). If you want to get drawf gouramies, get either a true pair (m/f), or a lone fish. As far as dealing with the fry, you should eliminate any breeding attempts by removing any and all bubble nests, and keeping other fishes in the tank.

What other fish might you suggest as tankmates?
Keeping with an asian theme, there's danios (not giant danio), rasbora's, cherry barbs, and gohst or amano shrimp. Other fishes that would work well, ut aren't sticking to an asian theme are: neon and similar tetras, smaller corydoras species (like panda), ottos and guppys. I'm sure there are many other fishes that would be compatible, but these are all that I can think of at the moment. Research (wich you should do for anthing that goes in your aquarium) should reveal the ones I missed.

I have a 55 gallon tank and if you look at my signature you will see that it is mostly gouramis, and a ten gallon with gouramis in it. I have several males in the 55 and they seem to get along fine. In a ten gallon I wouldnt reccomend it, but with larger tanks it seems to work out alright.

Why wouldn't you recomend it, becuase of your expierience with your opaline gouramies (a whole different species)?

It says you have gouramis in with a betta. From all the books I've read I heard this is a huge no-no due to fighting. Your's get along fine?

I have that same betta and three spot gourami combo(although I only have one gourami)., and have had zero problems, they pretty much ignore each other. I also think people give bettas a bad name becuase they or just expierience with a betta that was a phsycopath, wich is the minoprity. Personally, I have/am keeping bettas with fishes that shouldn't work based on what I've read shouldn't get along with each other (like drawf gouramies and fancy guppies), with little to no problems.

gouramis can be territorial, and in a mid to large size tank they can get away from one another, my betta and gouramis get along fine, they don't "play" together but they dont fight either
