male or female?

The females have much more on the lower gill plate than males that last pic looks male too although it has more green/blue spots on the gill plate.

Here is my male and female
Sorry about the bad pics.

Male: about 10in now

Female: About 6in

You can see my male has almost no blue on the gill plate wheras my females whole gill plate is full of blotches and sopts of blue/green. Also they are both almost full grown you can see how much bigger and bulkier the male is. Also adult size my male is gonna max out soon prob 10-12in and my female will stay at 6-7in.

cool that was great! more helpful than everything ive been able to google on them thanks paul!

hey paul how long before i start seeing that coloration in my dempsey?when will i start to see the purple?how old is yours?

no problem mike. after looking at pauls post his female has next to no spangles and if thats how they all look than it should be very easy to determine the difference, but that would also mean that 90% of the jack dempseys i have seen are male.other than from paul in havent goten to much help on this subject either alot of people contradict others its very frustrating.

based on what everyone has told me mike think you have two males personally but im no expert. pual seems to know alot more than me

The one that I posted today is thicker than the other one and is also a little longer. When they are in the same tank together the larger one fin slaps the other and also lip locks with it. I think I have two of the same sex,. Which sex I dont know. To quote Nolapete "JDs available are so far removed from the wild strains that sometimes only seeing their breeding tubes during spawning is the sure way of sexing them." I think thats the only way Im going to have any luck sexing mine.

P.s I wish there was an easy way to sex oscars
