He is a lovely fish that is just starting to really color up and turn red on his throat. I just found out that his partner is indeed a female because her tummy is getting bigger and her dorsal fin is much shorter and rounder. Anyhow, now he constantly chases her and kind of pecks at her throat a lot. I don't see any injuries, but she is bothered by it. What can I do, more plants maybe?

A divider?? Or an in-tank seperator.

sounds like they are going to mate, a divider might be your best option, but you may only need it for about 3 days, they may want to mate then....

I was just about to make a post about this.

I took the aggressive gourami out and put her in another tank for about 5 hours. Then I rearranged the tank and threw her back in. Now, instead of trying to kill the male, they rub up on each other all friendly like.

I purchased a pearl gourami wednesday and 3 dwarf gourami at the same time. Put them all in the tank and the pearl chased the dwarfs around all the time picking on them. Gave the pearl to my dad for a fathers day present and the dwarfs are all peaceful together. So seperation would be my suggestion as plants didn't help in my tank. They would hide in the plants but the pearl would just keep coming. I like the divider idea though, I know male can get very aggressive towards females when they want to mate.

They have been living together for quite some time and getting along, this is just a recent thing that I think has to do with the male's enthusiasm. I will get more plants, I would like to get another female, but do you think I have the room? All of them are listed in my sig in the 55. What do you think?

male gouramis are known for being aggressive towards one another. unfortunately, your male dwarf gouramis will probably become aggressive towards one another with time as well.

the male pearl gourami was exhibiting breeding behavior. you should be careful though, because he may harass her too much and overstress her. adding another female can help with this.
