Managuense Cichlid

I had a Jag and an Oscar in a 75 gallon tank for 9 years. Not only did they get along, but they were quite bonded to one another. When the Jag got sick, he was leaning to one side or the other, the Oscar was almost constantly at his side, propping him up. When the Jag died, the Oscar stopped eating, and died several months later. I've never seen or heard of anything like this behavior in fish. I got them both when the were young, but the Oscar was a little bigger than the Jag. If I didn't move to a smaller house, I think I would try that combination again, just to see if it was really that rare a situation.

Thats funny, beause I have the same thing going on. If oscars would mate with other cichlids, they would be a pair. Jag lays eggs, oscar protects them. They are always following each other around. Jag got hurt in a fight with a JD once, and was in QT for about two weeks. Oscar laid on the bottom of the tank and wouldn't eat the whole time. The second the jag was back in the tank, the oscar sprung to life and they swam literally touching side by side for the next few days. Never thought I would hear another story like this...odd.

Now, to add something useful to the thread...Jags range in agressiveness, but can be considered one of the most agressive cichlids. Right up there with doviis and RD's. If it is in a 75, chances are it will need to be by him/herself when adult size. However, they are a stunning fish with great personality. One of my favorite cichlids.

Lol, my male jag hates all other forms of life except for a female loisellei that lives with him. Unfortunately he's killed Texans, Convicts and Oscars before. :(
