Hello!

Before I got the mandarin goby there were all kinds of pods roaming around the tank. After 2 weeks with the goby, now there are only but the smallest of pods to be seen.

There is PLENTY of live rock, and even some larger gravel in areas on the sandbed.

Is my goby going to diminish his supply of pods until he has nothing to eat?

Getting a sump is not an option for me. Any suggestions?

Been there done that- well actually, I bought my Mandarin a bit too soon. As a result I've probably spend $200 dollars supplementing food for a $9.95 fish.
I have been buying various pod/tiny inverts assortment packages from several online vendors- I have ordered from all listed below with excellent results.
The Bug Farm
Florida Pets
Indo-Pacific Sea Farms
AquaCulture Store

Yes.

They eat an insane number of pods. If you don't have a refugium/sump, you're going to either want to keep the mandarin in probably 100+ gallons, or buy copepods every month:

Here's a place that sells them I saw referenced on Reef Central:

I don't know anything about this place, but it's the cheapest copepod source I've seen.

you can also try live brine shrimp. my mandarin eats live brine and i have even seen him nibble on a bit of frozen. alot of them will only eat pods. but some will eat other stuff.

just a thought

Or you could go out and buy a big plastic tub and fill it full of sea shells, rubble, a little water movment. Take a few pods from your main tank a voila. You might have to get pods a few times but you should be able to grow pleanty and save your self some money. You'd also gain some emergency water/holding tank.
