Would Mandarin's of different color's be considered different species?
I want to make a dragonet take, I currently have a HUGE green male mandarin, and a awsome male scooter. They get a long great, dont seem to mind the other at all. My question was if i did get a blue or red mandarin male would it fight with my green one? I plan on getting them females as well. If i cant keep Males of different colors together what about keeping a spotted male mandarin with them??
*side note* I am fully aware of their feeding requirements

im pretty sure that there are only 2 true types of mandarins, the green mandarin (its also sometimes blue, and with red... but same species) and the green spotted mandarin, which is a different species.

The green mandarin goby can have different colorations which is what you may be thinking of, or you may be thinking of a scooter blenny.

oh, sorry to not answer your question actual question.

Im sorry to ruin your plans but it is highly unlikely that you would be able to keep more than one mandarin in a tank, unless the tank is HUGE, as they are notorious for fighting with each other.

Also, it would be very hard to provide enough copepods for more than one mandarin.

I agree on the copepod pop. Having a mature tank and having a HUGE refuge (100G+) and buying more copepods, even still would maybe last a couple of months, one w/ a scooter should be plenty.

What are your plans on feeding if you do get more than one Mandarin?

There was one poster not long ago that said even her female attacked a new male mandarian. I'd not risk 2 males in the same tank even if one was a spotted and one was a green.

It must be a huge pod population you've got going to keep the mandy and scooter you already have. I'd sure not want to risk both of their health by adding more dragonettes to the mix.

i didnt have any trouble teaching either of the two i have to eat frozen food, thinking back the mandarin took longer to ajust, when i first got him he didnt hunt much though, kinda just hung around in the back corners of the tank, but he came around full circle and now he is not even the least bit shy, MOST the time. He comes in front of the tanks and flairs up, i do have a a good bit of live rock, i dont know how much, but i got a refuge to keep the pods comming so they have snacks through the day and i feed them twice a day. Both my scooter and my mandarin are in very good health.. never been sick, i have scooter for over a year and the mandarin about the same maybe a month less. i have been reading and have found myself wanting to try and breed mandarins, i read a huge article on reefcentral about it. it was unfinished however. If i bought my male a female mandarin would she need to be green as well? here is a pictur of my male mandarin, the next two picture is of a blue mandarin and a red mandarin i found on the net, this is what i mean when i say the color difference. would one that color spawn with my green male?

I'd say they all are Synchiropus splendidus

On breeding them I have no clue about success rates or what works. They are gorgeous fish and I'd just be really cautious about making sure they had enough pods to live off of.

i do not know much about breeding them either, but they are known to be EXTREMELY hard to pair up. If you have a pair, breeding shouldnt be much different than breeding any other fish, they spawn lay eggs fertalize then its up to you to do what you will to make sure the eggs hatch, which by itself is VERY hard.

But if you can get a pair, then go for it, but i doubt you will be able to find one very easily.

Im not trying to steer you away, just saying dont get your hopes up, because these fish arent tolerant of each other, and even if you do get them to lay eggs, water quality needs to be perfect for them to hatch.

And plus, these fish are a bit of a task to just keep alive.
