Marimo ball causing cladophora algae outbreaks

yup i just read about that about a month ago. Sure prevented me from buying a marimo ball.

I am sorry, I don't mean to make fun of you or the other guy, but that is complete nonsense. An aquarium myth that you are helping to perpetuate.

Having "Marimo balls" will not cause any other type of algae to grow or appear in your aquarium, nor will it cause other types of clado to appear.

This is a plant, just like any other plant, it just happens to be in the alga family. It grows extremely slowly. It takes about 25 years for a golf ball size marimo ball to reach the size of a grapefruit. This plant is not the least bit invasive, if fact other types of algae, like hair algae, will grow ON IT just like it does on wood or rock.

If you have an infestation of algae in your aquarium, it is for the same reasons that everyone has it, and it has nothing to do with your Marimo balls. Keep your tank clean, don't over feed your fish, and you will have less algae to deal with with or without your marimo balls.

It is really a shame when rumors like this continue to spread on forums like this without people who really know what they are talking about speaking up.

i read that marimo balls can form as a carpet on stuff as one of it's forms. it can form as a ball, as a carpet or a free floating little peice(i forget the technical name). i think it would be pretty cool to have some growing as a carpet in my tank, but so far mine just stay as a ball without spreading except a few teeny baby ones that have grown. i wonder if i attatched a baby one to something if it would grow across it.
