Marine Scavengers

You can buy empty shells that would work for hermits at a craft store or wal-mart for almost nothing. That shouldn't be a problem. They will switch back and forth all of the time.

Thanks for that tip. I can also get some shells from an LFS which is most likely more expensive, but my issue is that I do not want them to get too big since they can turn on each other or on snails/inverts in the tank when they get older. I will look at Walmart though to see if I can get some shells there at an approximate size that I would like.

I don't think any of the cleaner crew hermits get very big at all. I don't think you have to worry about them getting big enough to hurt anything. The blue legs and a zebra hermits seem to be the most agressive.

IMO, the scarlet hermits are the most peaceful, and the best looking ones.

I'd be very careful which hermits I purchased. I would get, red reef, left handed or blue legs ,"I'd think twice about the blue legs even." Unknown, hermits are a big gamble I once had 5 zebra hermits that nearly decimated my tank. They can and will grow fast and cause a lot of damage. I would get some that are proven to be more peacefull even if you need to wait. I'd also get a large varitety of snails, astera, nas, turbo, etc,"stay away from bumble bee snails."
I'd also get sand cleaning critters like , a cucumber or maybe a conch.

Hey, I saw in another thread that you were having some phosphate issues . If you add a diverse clean up crew hermits, snails, a cucumber and maybe some more shrimp you'll probably solve that issue.
Since you are setting up a reef tank you will also want to set up a fuge so that you can start growing cheatomorpha etc. for some nutrient export. You might also consider Xenia, Mushrooms, Rics etc. they are pretty fast growers for the most part and will lock up some nutrients.
