Marineland 400B filter question

Yea I have that plastic grey lever all the way up when I do it and still same thing. I'll try it again later today when I get home.

Samething is happening. Is this thing broken?

Something you can try to find out if it'll work at all.

What you'll need:
a piece of airline tubing, 3 ft or so.

What to do:

Remove the strainer on the intake.
Push the airline up the intake until it hits the very top.
Put the filter on the tank(if not already) and fill with water.
Turn on filter. (probably optional)

Next is the tricky part.
Hint: The longer the airline you use, the less chance of drinking tank water.

Stick the other end of the airline in your mouth.
Suck the air out of the Intake tube of the filter.
You'll know you have it all out when you see water comming through the airline.

BEFORE you stop sucking, pinch the airline. This will prevent air from going back into the Intake.
While still pinching the tubing, pull it out of the intake.

If this thing is going to work it'll be working now.

This is how we start alot of the over flows for a wet/dry sump.

Good luck!

you can also make sure nothing got sucked up in the intake tube that hangs in the tank and is blocking the water from being sucked up into the filter. and i dont think the motor is replaceable and maybe the impellor magnet is worn out and needs replaced. emperor 400's are excellent filters one of my favs i own several of them.

Just did that, water got near mouth and I pinched it and pull the tubing out. And still nothing. I had the filter filled with water and it drained that really good, but once that got semi drained you see the water just going up and down up and down.

I had this same emperor one time.

And I'm recalling mine doing something like this.
I fiddled and fiddled and it did finally work. And this was brand new out of the box. I ran it for maybe a year. Got tired of the fiddleing/tweaking to get it running after cleanig, and through it in the trash.
It was replaced with a good 'ol 350 magnum. ;)

I think I'm going go to a petstore near my house to compare my impeller with a new one.

I just don't get how it'll shoot the water out of the spray bar when I fill the filter up with water, but won't suck up any from the tank.

You'v already swapped impellers and magnets between your identical emperors and verified that only one motor housing is not spinning continuous in the same direction but oscillating back and forth right? So only that stator is bad, and you already proved that both rotors (magnet impellers) are good. So that one stator is wacked, its rare but it happens. I do recommend you replace it with a Penguin 350 though, as mine has been trouble free, silent, and reliable.

I haven't checked if the impeller spins back and forth, I'll have to take a look at that with it on. Maybe that is why the water in the filter goes up and down.

If I'm forced to get a filter it'll probably be a canister because this was going be going on a 40g turtle tank, and I figured it would save me some cash since the turtle in that tank will be going into the 127g tank when older.

Well I actaully just got it to work! I emailed marineland lastnight and they sent me a email today saying that I should take the bio-wheels out and aim the spray bar at the filter so the water it sucks up that was in the filter will just get pushed back into it and it'll create a prime. Well it work!

My only thing is how should the water be flowing out of the filter? It sort of drips, unlike my AC I have on my 10g that has the waterfall look.
