It can be from a multitude of things from bad genes to harsh living conditions. The easiest way to get strobg healthy bettas would be from a breeder. Obviously this will cost more but the outcome is almost always better given you can provide a healthy enviroment.

The Bettas I see in aquarium society auctions typically go for $3 or 4. I'm not suggesting to go directly to a breeder.

Water is changed every other day with fresh dechlorinated water. All eat just fine. I can leave and all are fine then I return a day later.. One or two have fungus.
 
You never know what will happen. Sometimes things will just pop up out of the blue and go haywire on you. The best you can do is give any fish a healthy enviroment where it can thrive. So far it sounds like thats what your doing. Btw, dario dario are awesome.
