anyone else out there that use this filter, just wondering on instead of buying the cartridges, a inexpensive way to make your own, or some of your set ups? get rid of the extra 2 media slots, maybe put a sponge in there or something?.

I just cut a piece of floss to size and put it in where the cartridge would go. As far as the extra media slots, doesn't the filter come with cartridges already? I put peat nuggets in mine. Or you con use charcoal, whatever you want. If you do not want to use the cartridges You could cut some sponge or floss to size instead, just make sure there is sufficient water flow through them.

You could get media baskets, that would allow you to customize your filtration......:)

I have these and love them!! I use the extra media box, and add this stuff.

cut it to fit the filter box and man it keeps the tank clean and its amazingly cheap!!! one roll lasted me a year!!!

I filled one side with lava rock for biomedia, and cut a hole in one of the blue cartridges to dump out the carbon, and use that in the other side.

I run 2 on my 90 Gal. I use the frames, and the blue sponges that mostlycichlids uses, and the same filter floss in the frames that granny uses! Dont need the carbon bags. Awsome filtration!

well, in my opinion, the cheapest way is to get some polyester batting that they make blankets out of
