Marineland Stealth recall update

Just got an email from Dr Fosters and Smith..looks like recall affects stealth and stealth pro from 2004 to current.(Models listed in recall notice)
I'm going to double check my heaters.. I have a bunch of old ones that are still working in tanks..
last time I worked with Dr Fosters and smith they sent me the replacements with a return shipping label(postage paid)

I called Marineland yesterday; the fellow I spoke with confirmed that the recall covers *all* Stealth and Stealth Pro heaters from all years. They are shipping me a Visitherm replacement along with the shipping label to send the Stealth back to them. Unfortunately, they have close to a 4 week backlog, so I bit the bullet and bought a new heater on the way home - better safe than sorry, and I can always use it when I upgrade my tank to a larger one.

I also called today. I had a 150w and 200w I pulled from my tanks when all this started. I took the replacements also, back order 4-6 weeks, maybe sooner. Gave me a case # also. Whole telephone conversation took 6 mins, with wait time.

i gave them a call yester yesterday and they gave me a number to call they asked if i wanted cash refund or a replacement heater i asked for another heater the lady asked if a glass heater would be alright i said it would be o k she said they would send me a heater and make arrangment to pick up the steath heater does any one know if glass heaters are any good ?

I took my 50w to Petsmart and got cash back for it. Thanks for the heads up.

I was not quite so lucky. I spoke to 2 separate people on the phone, who assured me that they would be able to give cash refunds for all stealth heaters. I went through my tanks, pulled out every stealth heater, cleaned them up, and trooped all the way over. Mind you, there's only 1 petsmart in NYC so far, and it's nowhere near where I live. Once I got there, despite having called and double checked RIGHT BEFORE heading over, the line I was sold at the store was completely different. The manager there was adamant that they could only issue me a store credit, which had to be spent with them. When I politely pointed out that Marineland was reimbursing them for all their heaters, and there was no reason they should get 2x the money, with my sales and the reimbursement, I was brusquely told that it was company policy and they could do nothing about it. Nice to see that others have had better luck, and that particular manager was just full of ____. Suffice to say, I will not be going back.

For those of you who are sending the heaters back to Marineland directly, this is what they are offering.

50 and 75w - $22.99
100 and 150w - $24.99
200w - $26.99
250w - $27.99

All these prices were for regular stealth heaters. Not sure what they are reimbursing for the pros.

I just pulled a 250w old-style Stealth out of a 40 breeder last week, second one of those that's gone bad and tried to cook my fish in a month. The first one was in a 33L, it did kill 5 little brevis fry but none of the BN or endler's. I have 5 more of those still in use, and 3 of the Pro's high and dry. I only used 2 of the Pro's for a short time before I heard about the exploding issue, the 3rd is still new in the box. I have 13 tanks running, and need to replace 10 heaters. Looks like I'll be shipping a medium flat-rate box full of heaters back to Marineland...

I have two. Good thing it's warm here now and I don't really need a heater. This would suck if it was winter. Lesson: if you keep backups of your equipment, might be a good idea to have different brands for your back-ups.

Ah...now there is an option. I wasn't thrilled about exchanging them for MORE Marineland heaters...(tho the 1 visitherm I have works great).

I have 12-13 of them, some still in use, and have already purchased a few replacements. Might just exchange them and use the $$ to try another brand.
