Marks on glass

I bought my 55gal tank used. After I got it set up I noticed marks when you look at it at certain angles. I've tried everything I can think of to clean them off but nothing has worked. Any ideas would be great.

marks like scratches, cuts or indentations?
is the aquarium acrylic or glass?

It's a glass aquarium. The marks are not in the glass they are on it. A razor blade will start to take it off but I was looking for a better/easier way.

I dont get it. Is it alage? What colour is it?

It's marks on the outside of the glass. Don't know at all how they got there must have been on the tank when I got it, I can feel them with my finger nails. I was thinking mabey some kind of polishing compound would get them off?
