mattenfilter/RUGF combo --- good idea?

I'm thinking about setting up a mattenfilter/RUGF. Does anyone see a problem with that combo? The one thing I thought of was possible surface film due to lack of agitation. Anyone have an opinion on that? Thanks!

shouldnt have film unless you put something in the tank that would cause film. sum substrates, drift wood, and chemicals will cause film. as long as you have circulation then there shouldnt be a problem. and if there is you could always get a power head.

I'll always do some vaccing when I do water changes (got the siphon going anyway, so why not?), but it would be nice to reduce the need. Again, not looking to cut back on water changes, just reduce the crud in the rocks. Yes, I know it just ends up in the filter. I like that better for some reason. I never said I made sense. :p:
get plants. lol problem solved. lol

I have 2 tanks set up that way, a 29 and a 55. I used bulk pond filter media (blue/white bonded pad) on top of the UG filter plates with a relatively thin layer of gravel on top. The filter plates are connected to aquaclear 70 powerheads (using suitable size vinyl tube and pvc fittings to attach them to the lift tubes) with quickfilter cartridges for prefilters. I use the same filter media wrapped around the plastic quickfilter core; the fine filter pads that comes with them clog too quickly.
The 29 also has a smaller powerhead (aquaclear 30) attached to a hydrosponge for additional circulation, and the 55 also has a fluval 304 canister (soon to be switched over to an eheim) for the same purpose. Along with helping to oxygenate the water, the hydrosponge and canister also pick up more debris from the tank.
The 29 currently houses a pair of cutteri cichlids and a swarm of growing fry (I think they're about 6 weeks old now) along with several stray BN juvies and a couple Akysis catfish. Very heavy stocking/bioload for a 29, but all the fish are healthy and growing.
The 55 currently houses a group of 6 Victorian cichlids and 7 Synodontis lucipinnis, average size of 4" all around.
