i was thinking of starting a 5 gallon (only 5 bux for a tank) and i was wondering what would be ok to have in it. i dont have a spare air pump, but i have a whisper filter (10 gallon size).:help:

what would work in it?

yeah... whisper filters are crap though.

That could make a nice invert tank, with shrimp, snails, and/or small crayfish. Small livebearers or killifish are also good options. I think the surface agitation created by the filter might be enough to aerate the tank properly. Of course, you could keep an air gulper like a betta, dwarf gourami (not sure if this will work in 5 gallon), or newt and aeration will be less of an issue.

i used it on my 10 gallon and never had one problem with it.
they work... they are just a low-quality filter IMO. mine always got clogged and certianly didn't clean the water as efficiently as my aquaclear did when I had my 10G, and my whisper filter was rated for 20G tanks.

i'll admit, mine did clog once, but i cleaned the intake tube once a month (My pleco mainly did that:lipssealedsmilie:). my water was sparkly clear after that.

good thing about it is i put the bio foam in my bio wheel filter behind the cartridge so the bacteria would still live if i started another 5 or 10gallon.

how about a single dwarf gourami?

iam not really a fan of gouramis. i was thinking a betta and some shrimp or snails. my lfs wants 2.99 for each of any of their "assorted" snails. i wish they had the snails actual names so i didnt get an apple snail that would over rule the tank. but i think the betta would be to stressed out by the filter pushin the water around.

Pygmy sunfish could also work well.

You don't really have to have a filter, you just have to do more frequent water changes without one.
