mbuna in a 55g

like the wood work very nice whats your stock?

oh...

eleven (?) yellow labs (moved five elsewhere)
five metriaclima callainos (cobalt blue zebra)
five rusty (iodotropheus sprengerae)

plus two clown pleco and four siamese algae eaters-- not biotope authentic, but they appreciate the swimming room-- they're in the 4"+ range now, doubled in size from when i got them. they're also fast enough and aren't bothered by their feisty tankmates.

obviously granite blocks aren't super authentic either. but they do make a heck of a rockpile.

i dont think CAE make good inhabitants for Africans but im sure some one else will tell you this..... so ill keep my mouth shut and give you a break... love the stock though but what is eleven (?)..........

Thats a lot of rock! Why all on one side?

CAE and SAE are different...the OP has SAE's. But I agree that they will not survive a mbuna tank, especially once things start breeding. Same with the clown plecs. Some people have decent luck with adding plecos though, so that may work for you.

right, SAE vs. CAE. they've survived a pretty long time without problems. the mbuna don't seem to pay them any attention actually, and they're both bigger and faster than most of them anyhow.

a lot of people seem to do BN, why not clowns? they stay reasonably sized. also not bothered by the cichlids-- heck I never see them during the day anyhow.

rocks on one side because that's where i made my driftwood 3d labyrinth :). i'd have mixed the wood and the rocks, but it wasn't super stable. i move around the fishes' territories on a regular basis-- every couple months, it seems like.

eleven (?) because i think i had sixteen yellow labs. or was it fifteen? in which case it's only ten. i can't count them as they duck in and out of the rocks. i took five out for sure.

thanks all. it's been tough finding the right rocks; and i need a backdrop or something; i keep planning on going to a fabric store (or something) and picking up some black felt for the backgrounds... that should be ok right?

in case you're wondering, i have eggcrate under the gravel/rocks. i also used eggcrate as light diffusers and to keep fish from jumping out. during the winter about 1/2" evaporates every day-- which is ok, as I keep it topped up, and I'm happy to have it providing the house with some humidity/heat.
