i saw some great looking cories at my lfs at a cheap price. can i put some in with my africans

Nope the africans will be too much for them. If you want catfish look at synodontis species. You could also try bristlenose pleco - some have nasty experiences of their eyes being bitten out mind you, some seem to do very well. Synos would be better generally - from lake tanganyika and have similar water requirements therefore to rift lake cichlids. Great catfish too, although highly nocturnal.

edit : if you can get them lophiobagrus species catfish are also from tanganyika and are very interesting, and can go in your tank.

Jewel cichlids are not from the Rift Lakes, but rather the rivers of West Africa. Different conditions are needed so I wouldn't recommend adding Jewels with Mbunas.
