Mean and Meaner Cichlids

I was at my local lfs yesterday and they described ciclids in two catagories (besides African and S.A) mean and meaner. I want to start a cichlid tank in my 48 gallon tank, but with the cichlids with less agressive tendencies. What type of cichlids would you catagorize as 'mean' and which as 'meaner'? I'm still contemplating which to get.

My stock seems pretty docile,but on the other hand maybe i got lucky.
I think you may need to get a bigger tank also,if you don't go with dwarf cichlids.

In a 48 gallon get less agressive species. I dont know which your talking about, african or SA, but in a 48 i wouldnt do any meaner fish from either catagory.

If you want africans you could house lake tang shell dwellers or some lake tang rock dwellers. There are some peacefull lake malwai peacocks that you would be able to house. Can't help with SA's. That's a very poor way for a LFS to advertise.

If you want american cichlids. You can make some mixes the following with chances of there being little or no aggression.

Rainbow cichlids
Severums
Acaras (port, red breasted, blue)
Sajicas
A.Spilurus
Smaller geophagus species
festivums
red pendex
angels
some of the smaller dwarf pikes

There are a whole bunch.
Keep in mind that it will depend the the mix you make and the fishes personalities. Some cichlids will be very docile and not care about tankmates other will be absolute terrors even though they are suppose to be more relaxed. I have a couple of festivums like that.
