Meat for my common Pleco

shrimp and other invertebrates are best, some fish may also be taken. remember, most common plecos are about 70-80% herbivorous although it does vary greatly depending on the individual fish.

BTW... your 55G may eventually be too small for the commmon pleco. they get a good 1-1/2 to 2 feet long as adults. my dad has one thats about 26" long.
 
Beautiful fish! Checkout my avatar...I have one too! I feed him thawed frozen shrimp that I chop up, salmon filet, cantelope, watermelon, squash, cucumber, algae disks, and he also seems to enjoy the shrimp pellets that I drop in for the cories.

He was at Petco, in a large freezer bag floating on top of their plant tank :headshake2: . I was plant shopping and spotted him. When I asked the guy in charge of the fish he said that someone brought him in since he had outgrown their tank. Did I want to adopt him? I was only looking for plants but couldn't resist! He is our favorite fish.

I am shopping for a 100-150 gallon tank right now since he is huge and will only get bigger!

Common plecs fit into three sub species. Gibby, hypo, or pug... They are all three of them omnivores with a strong herbivore bias. If you're like to treat him with meaty foods, that's fine, he'll enjoy the variety in his diet, but keep in mind that too much protein is'nt good for him. A little here and there rounds out his diet, be he should'nt be made to live on it.

Shrimp pellets, prawn shrimp, salad shrimp, salmon or tuna (raw) and lots of other goodies are greatly appreciated by the common pleco, but he's still got to eat his veggies if he's going to stay healthy and happy.

The reason most people blanch veggies before putting them into the tank is to remove any residual trace of pesticides, wax, and to kill any fungus or bacteria on the veg before it gets into the tank. It's not really because the fish needs it slightly cooked, it's just us safeguarding our water quality.

I don't think that is a common... dorsal fin looks too high and the tail fin is not quite right. Most commons don't have that leading edge or extended tip bit...

But it is a beautiful specimin. Not sure what type of meat though... I have heard they do like adult brine shrip and other such live foods
 
I think he's about 10 inches long. I am bidding on a 150 gallon on Ebay right now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
