I am wanting to convert my 55g to full sw, My quesiton is Do i need a mechianical filter or could I just use a protein skimmer, and a good cleanup crew... Fish only or will I have trouble? IM trying to do this on a budget and gradually go live rock ect..

if you are going fish only then a mechanical filter will be alright although its not the best. its much better to have a good protien skimmer, lots of water flow, and a decent amount of live rock.
if you are referring to only having a protein skimmer as your only source of filtration and no live rock then I think you will be doing a bunch of water changes. I have never tried this but i think it would be a bad idea. You will know once its cycled how stable it is. I would gradually introduce the livestock one at a time to see how it taxes the system.
The problem with this method is it would be too late if it doesn't work.
