I have a planted tank currently with some SAE's and Oto cats. I am looking for something med sized like a guarami (sp) sized fish to fill up the middle of my aquarium. the more color the better. its a 46 gallon. the lfs recomended discus but I thought they were only brackish. and what little reading i have done on them say they need water temps in the low 80's which i am not sure will agree with my plants or fish. eventually I want to have 6-8 yoyo's on the bottom in addition to the others. any help is appreciated. thank you.

Discus aren't brackish, but do need the warmer temps. They also can be a bit fussy about water conditions.

Another medium sized fish--rainbows. There are several different colors, they get decent sized, and school nicely. They tend to ignore other fish (at least mine did!) and are pretty hardy, active fish. The males are spectacularly colored, and really flashy, while the females are a bit less bright, but still pretty.

Angelfish are another option.

another lfs just recomended blue rams or maybe dwarf blue rams. is this a good or bad idea. i ask cause they were very good looking

Rams are not going to be in the middle/top of your aquarium. They tend to stay near the bottom. If you want a schooling fish I would agree with Oriongirl and get rainbows. I have 3 Pearl Gouramis (1M 2F) in my 55. They are about 4" each.

well I fell in love with them when they showed them to me. so.....I bought some. now my question is since they like to hand at the bottom of the tank will they eat flakes? or do I need to get some sort of sinking pellet? thanks for the help.

My rams eat anything I put in the tank. Besides my clowns, they are the biggest eaters in my tank. When I feed flakes I usually try to sink them. That way I don't have a bunch of flakes floating on the surface while my fish are waiting to get fed :)
