Hello. What is a good medication for velvet that wouldn't hurt my pleco? I am pretty sure he has it along with the platys and neons. I've been using CopperSafe, but I'm not sure it has been working very well since I found out that Stress Coat may neutrilize heavy metals. I plan to get a copper tester today. He isn't acting his usual. Thanks for any help.

I think he is a common pleco and the tank is 29 gallons. Thanks for responding!!!

Velvet is a tough one, salt won't be 100% effective from what I've read, Formalin and malechite green usually are though. that will be tough with your pleco but if you are careful with dosage you should be O.K.
Velvet (oodinium) is a photosynthesizing parasite, in other words it can use light to produce food. Blacking out the tank during treatment will help your battle a bunch. Also malechite green and formalin both react to organics so cleaning the tank super well and withholding food will help them do their job better. Do not be afraid to withhold food for 4-5 days. I do it all the time and my fish don't even act different when I feed them next. they eat the same whether I feed every day or twice a week.

Velvet is usually quick to take over, so Double check your diagnosis and treat immediatly.

With pleco's acting odd, there may be more amiss. Take a good look at your pleco's belly, it should be rounded and filled out (at least flat) not concave. Plecos tend to be plauged by internal parasites, and a sunken belly is the first sign. if he is still eating, metrodozinal soaked into his food will usually take care of it. If his belly is rounded and he eats good then he's probably fine in the regard of internal nasties
